PENN Entertainment, Inc. has announced plans for the construction of a new Hollywood Casino Aurora, with a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for November 29th at 2:45 pm CT. The company also aims to develop a brand new land-based casino, hotel, and entertainment complex to replace its existing riverboat casino in the area.
The new regional destination, estimated to be worth $360 million, will be located near the Chicago Premium Outlets and Interstate 88 in Aurora. The property will feature approximately 1,200 gaming jobs, a retail sportsbook, 220 guest rooms, a full-service spa, an outdoor entertainment area, premium restaurants and bars, 1,700 parking spaces, and a 12,000-square-foot event center with meeting rooms. This development is expected to create 700 permanent positions and 700 construction jobs, effectively doubling the current team members at the Aurora location.
In a statement to the BusinessWire, Jay Snowden, the Chairman and CEO of PENN Entertainment, expressed excitement about the upcoming project, emphasizing the company’s strong partnership with the City of Aurora and the positive impact it will have on the community.
The relocation of the casino to land was made possible by a law signed four years ago, allowing riverboat casinos to transition to land-based facilities. The existing Hollywood Casino Aurora, located at the Fox River in downtown Aurora, will continue its operations while the new hotel-casino is under construction, which is expected to take approximately 24 months to complete.
The expansion project in Aurora is part of a larger plan that includes the development of new land-based casinos in Joliet, Illinois, an additional hotel tower in Henderson, Nevada, and a total budget of $850 million, contributed by Gaming and Leisure Properties Inc. The Hollywood Casino Aurora offers over 40,000 square feet of gambling space, with more than 1,000 slot machines, 21 table games, and live poker.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the Hollywood Casino Aurora is expected to be attended by members of the Illinois General Assembly, the Illinois Gaming Board, the City Council, the Mayor, local shareholders, and labor organizations. Upon completion, the new Hollywood Casino Aurora aims to welcome residents and visitors to the Chicago area, further enhancing the entertainment and economic opportunities in the region.
