Chris Sale signs 2-year extension with Atlanta Braves

On Thursday, January 4th, 2024, the Atlanta Braves made a significant move by signing their veteran left – handed starting pitcher, Chris Sale, to a 2 – year contract extension valued at up to approximately $38 million. This contract extension comes just a week after Sale was traded from the Boston Red Sox to the Braves.

Sale’s previous contract was set to run through the year 2024 and guaranteed him $27.5 million, with $10 million of that being deferred money, bringing the present value down to around $20 – $21 million. The contract also included a $20 million club option for the 2025 MLB season.

The new deal with the Atlanta Braves boosts Sale’s present – day guarantee by giving him $16 million for 2024 and $22 million for 2025, with an additional $18 million club option for the year 2026. This commitment from the Braves is a testament to their faith in Sale, who will turn 35 on March 30th, 2024.

The Braves’ commitment to Sale was evident when they traded their top prospect, Vaughn Grissom, as well as $17 million cash money, to the Red Sox for Sale. “They put their faith and trust in me,” Sale expressed. “This allows me to be more comfortable knowing I’m going to be here a couple of years and can get settled in.”

The Braves’ rotation is set to undergo some changes, with Max Fried entering free agency after the 2024 season and Charlie Morton nearing retirement. With only Spencer Strider locked under contract past the 2024 season, the Braves turned to Sale as a veteran presence to lead the next generation of pitchers.

Sale experienced a resurgence in the 2023 season, following a challenging stretch that saw him sidelined with injuries. Despite these setbacks, Sale’s performance remained strong, and the Braves saw an opportunity to invest in one of the most accomplished pitchers in baseball.

With Sale joining the Braves’ rotation, the team is positioned as strong contenders to win the 2024 MLB World Series. “I’m excited to join this staff,” says Sale. “We can feed off each other and compete for another division title and hopefully a World Series championship.”

Sale’s impressive baseball career includes several accolades such as 7 – Time MLB All – Star Selection, World Series Champion, and 2 – Time American League Strikeout Leader. He also holds MLB records for fastest to 2,000 strikeouts, most immaculate innings pitched, and the highest career strikeouts per 9 innings.
